98 Civic problems after rain	Sign In

I have a 98 Honda Civic which is parked on my driveway overnight. After some rain during the night, it will start fine, but when I get to the stop sign a few feet from my house it feels like it is going to stall. If I have to make a quick left turn on the street because of traffic it hesitates for a moment then kicks into gear. At that point the check engine light starts flashing. Once the car is fully warmed up it will operate normally until the next rain fall. I used the paperclip trick to check the code but it came up blank. I've noticed that if I park with the front of the car angle up the problem isn't as noticeable.

this car is a 98 so the paperclip trick wont work. it has the obd2 system in it. that only works on the obd1 system. i would think mybe the water is getting under the hood and shorting out the spark plugs. check for water in the spark plug holes and around the distributor. if this only happens untill it warms up it's becuse of the water evaporating away. check this and let me know if thats what it is.

since this seems to happen with rain and position of car this is likely just the moisture issue with secondary items with water that gets where it shouldn't in any volume.

Darrin said look at the plug socket and you should as that sure would strain them.

Also: Check for the integrity of the rubber hood sealing rain water out. Leaves, pine needles etc can be a source of trouble.

There just about has to be a weak spot in the coil, wires or plugs. You might find the weak link with spraying these parts with cool tap water (cool engine) while it's fairly dark and see arcing. These items should take being misted but none would like being really soaked. You may not see arcing but if a spot reacts to this that's the likely spot, T

good point tom. i also thought about the position of the car. and i know water is conductive. and can cause a short. i'd check there first.
