98 Chevy Cavalier won't go when I step on the gas/engine runs rough Sign In

1998 Chevy Cavalier (door sticker production Sept.97) 4 cylinder,2.2 litre 68,000 miles.
I stepped on the gas to go after I stopped at a stop sign and the car would not go with much power. I stepped on the gas again and it would not go (did not hear engine rev either). I got a few spurts of power ,enough to get around the corner and up the driveway. As I parked I heard the engine running rough. I started it up later several times. It idled rough and choked one of the times. About a week ago it did the same thing one time as I stepped on the gas but I ignored it,I thought I must have been mistaken as it was just that one time and there were no more problems. No dashboard lights have illuminated signaling a problem. It's been damp out, any chance that could affect this vehicle?

What engine does it have? They are all 4 cylinders.

You might be due for some plugs and wires. I'm really surprised the check engine light has not come on at all? The computer should be picking up on some of that.
