My 97 Mercury Villager LS starts up just fine. Then when I put it into reverse or drive, it dies. Mileage is approx 180000. Automatic transmission. Just prior to this problem, the vehicle had not been started for about 10 days. This was in winter, in a cold climate.

Just a quick thought......check the air tube going to the throttle body.... I saw one once that had a split in the tube, you couldn't see it and would seal (enough) under normal driving. It had a bad motor mount that allowed the engine to move a lot, when in reverse & it was enough to pull the tube apart causing the car to die in reverse only due to too much false air
