97 Toyota Tercel Speedometer/Odometer not working Sign In

I have a 1997 Toyota Tercel, Automatic, 2-doors, 125K miles, 1.5/1.6L engine on it. The speedometer and odometer suddenly stopped working. I thought it was the cable at first but a buddy mechanic checked it out and he said that it shouldn't be the speedometer cable because it is attached and tight and not damaged. Whatelse could it be?
Can it be the entire cluster? The cable is about 20 bucks but the labor would be like $50, should I replace it just incase?

HELP! Thanks

pull the speed sensor out and check the gear. Its a plastic gear and the teeth could be bad
