97 Monte Carlo LS - back suspension Sign In

Hello,

I am brand new to this site but not the automotive world. Don't get me wrong I'm a complete newbie to manually fixing my car my self, but I'm trying to expand my grasp on the subject.

A few months ago I acquired my first car, she is a 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. This car has been very good to me and I love it. I changed the brakes, oil and a few other things on this car myself (with the help of friends and the Haynes Manual). Up to this point everything was going fine.

Problem:

Recently, when ever I go into a dip that causes my car to move more than just accelerating and decelerating would cause; the back of my car squeaks. I looked in my Haynes Manual, trying to figure out if my car has a Shock or Strut Suspension, she has a Strut. It appears very easy (with some help) to change the struts. What my question is, does it make sense for my back suspension to squeak, and its problem source to have been the struts?

Background information:

My drivers side back has ONE, slightly bent suspension arm (I have already planned for this to be fixed). It doesn't make sense that, that would be the source of the squeaking.

ALSO, as each day goes on and on, the squeaking in my rear is triggered by more and more simple motions of my car.

What could be causing this??
What should and shouldn't I change on my car to fix this problem??

Struts usually don't squeak, they clunk when they go bad. I guess your going to have to get under the vehicle and have someone bounce the rear while you try to pinpoint the location of the noise.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
