I was driving down the road in my 97 Chysler Sebring Lxi coup, and noticed some smoke coming out from under the hood and pulled over. popped the hood and water was everywhere. Apparently my radiator cap popped off somewhere down the road. I called for my buddy to come bring me water as my radiator was bone dry. Got it to his house (5mi) away. Engine is okay no water in the oil. We got a new cap and secured it. My fans click on when i turn AC on, and one will come on when it reaches a certain heat point. Yet after refilling with water (going to try and add some more antifreeze or at least 50/50 to it when the level drops some) my temp tends to stay at 50% and oil pressure around 50-60. I am fairly sure my running temp before this was near to the bottom for my water and not at 50 but honestly I never consciously looked over there to be sure. I'm not sure what else could be making it so hot. The 50 is when I first turn it on it goes up 5-10% but no higher least within a 5-10 minute drive.

I do suspect I might have a small radiator leak to as I saw some steam coming off after I put the new cap on. That could have simply been heat left over and some water from the rain though.

I was going to test it tomorrow for my two classes, then maybe put in a new thermostat. Is there a danger running with it being fairly warm if that's not the correct temperature.

With the first mess a leak may be hard to find right away till all is dry. A pressure test should show leaks to help and hope overheating didn't do any more damage. Fix the leak of course as it could prohibit needed pressure that the radiator cap controls keeping boiling point much higher,
