The 97 Chevy Lumina has a 3.1 V6 engine with 137k miles on it. My parents and I noticed that the oil levels would run dangerously low. We thought it was just an oil burner with it being an old vehicle, so I checked the oil everyday. Soon though, the car started hesitating when you attempted to accelerate and soon died on my father as he was getting it back to our home. I finally chose to spend the shiny penny to have some experienced eyes look at it, and got some answers.

Codes

P0151- O2 Heater Sen
P0300- Misfire
P0401- EGR Flow Insuff.
P0706- Trans Range Switch
P1870- Trans slipping

Mechanic's Notes- Intake gaskets are leaking bad. Has been running down onto starter. Starter selnoid only engages sometimes. Flywheel has a few teeth with small chips due to starter problem. Spark Plugs and wires all original. Noted vehicle does not reach vehicle temp.

The fella told me that I had to buy/replace the spark plugs and wires, the thermostat, 2 valve cover gaskets, and the intake gaskets. Also recommended I replace the starter. I declined the dealership's bill (overpriced). So the work is there for me to learn how to do and get done.

I am looking for opinions on this car before I invest into what could be a trashcan. The car was a cheap one so I have some room to put a little money into it and no ability to buy a newer car. Replacing the starter is definitely out of my budget right now. So by replacing the plugs, thermostat, wires, covers, and gaskets, am I on the way to getting my money's worth out of the car or wasting my time, effort, and sanity?

You seem to be downplaying just how much work is involved in the repairs you describe. Those intake gaskets are not something you should tackle if you're not experienced.
It also appears you have some transmission issues on the horizon.
