97 Astro Possible fuel filter problem Sign In

I have a 97 Chevy Astro V6 with about 160k miles.

I was driving the van about 50 mph when it suddenly turned off then turned itself back on. I have driven it once since then and it was doing the same thing. I've been researching possible problems. From everything I've read it seems it's the fuel filter getting clogged and turning the engine off then unclogging and starting back up. Does this seem like it could be the problem? The service engine light is on but I don't have a way to get it read since I don't want to run the engine any more than I have to.

The battery connections are all good so the only thing I can think of is a fuel pressure problem or the fuel filter.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you don't want to drive it for codes which could help save a lot of guessing then if you can just replace fuel filter as a new one shouldn't hurt anything but doubt that is the problem.

If a fuel pressure problem you'll have to catch it while not running but if it self corrects instantly might not get good info.

You may have to tow it to where it can be properly diagnosed. Check engine light staying on suggest a hard code stored and may not be fuel related at all,

Well I decided to roll the dice and I took it to Autozone to have the system read. It didn't give me any problems getting there.

It had 2 errors that the system was showing and was something about a Mass Airflow Sensor but I'm pretty sure it is related to the catalytic converter which I've been told by a mechanic is broken (it rattles at low RPMs).

I guess it's just going to have to go to the shop because I can't afford to just start replacing things + the $250 cat converter.

Thanks.

You could try cleaning the mass air flow sensor. What was the other code? A heat shield rattling on converter wouldn't set a code and wouldn't always mean a new converter which would be a lot more that $250 for an OE grade one.

One issue can cause another code and fixing one can correct the other. Clean MAF sensor and throttle body. If idle improves and it runs well code should go away and light go out in some time if corrected by that or parts could be required. Codes tell of the circuit involved not the exact reason. The zone is there to sell parts not make a definitive diagnosis - you do,

What were the code numbers? A mass air flow sensor can cause stalling. Cleaning it may not help.
