Ive got a 96 ford escort gt 1.8l thats got 177k that seems to have some fuel issues as of late...was driving down the highway and came to a stop light and she died, no warning, nothing...spent week running through all the wiring, fuses, testing the fuel pump, checking inertia switch and finally ended up replacing the pump and still wouldnt start so i took her to a mechanic and turned out it was just a bad ground on the fuel pump...thought my problems were over but the other day was once again driving on the highway and came to the same stoplight and shifted down to 2nd, car began to sputter as if it was out of fuel...pulled over and sat and called my mom to bring me fuel...anyways the car started right back up after about 5 mins of sitting. drove in town to try and get to a gas station but lo and behold another stoplight, same story...pulled the gas cap off and noticed no fuel pressure...finally got it home after the car dying at every turn or stoplight...checked fuel pump, replaced fuel filter and checked fuel lines and cant seem to find any leaks there...the fuel hose seems to bulge in spots but cant see any cracks...finally checked vacuum and found the intake manifold runner vacuum motor was broken...the nipple had broken off...i taped the heck out it and was able to get it on the highway and about 60 miles to my buddies house...no problems except for one right turn but this particular model of escort is known to cut out on right turns, so i wrote it off to that...went to town later that night, only about 15 mins away on the highway and once i made it to town began having the same issues as before but considerably worse...got was shaking like crazy and wouldnt start at all...towed it back to my buddies and fixed the vacuum motor the "right" way this time and car started after a few cranks...i was able to rev the engine to about 5k rpm and it shut off, started again and as soon as i touched the gas pedal it died...ive checked the inertia switch, double checked the fuel pump, made sure i had spark, and doublechecked fuse again...im at a loss as to where to start diagnosing this problem...tired of bashing my head against the wall...also coincidence or not, but the heater core went out the same time it died on the highway the time after i replaced the fuel pump...any help or advice as to where to start would be more than greatly appreciated and unfortunatley i cant afford to take to a mechanic again as i just got laid off and waiting on unemployment to get here...once again thanks in advance

The 1st step would be to try to see what is missing when it dies. If it starts right up then it'll be tougher but you can't be running these test while it's running. From what you've posted it really sounds electrical, fuel problems usually sputter when the car dies... Try pulling codes and see if there is any help there....

Im sorry, i did mean to say that it still continues to sputter while it dies...it shakes something horrible...but i cant even get it to fire now...it cranks but thats it...have spark, fuel pump does turn on but not getting any fuel in the lines at all...i wont be able to pull codes for a while because the autozone or oreillys cant get the codes off my model gt...and anywhere else its gonna cost at least 100 bucks that i dont have at the moment...once the state gets there butts in gear i would gladly go get the codes pulled...i do appreciate your time and im not trying to take advantage of it but any ideas to attempt to diagnose the problem without getting the codes pulled would still be appreciated

I read your entire post. I see you are focused on an issue with fuel delivery and volume. You said anyways the car started right back up after about 5 mins of sitting. This just further supports my claim of a spark issue. Something is getting hot (ignition module or coil) and when hot it shorts and opens the circuit so the car stalls. Then the car sits and (whatever opened) in the first place cools down and closes so the car starts. Turn your attention to an primary or secondary spark issue.

Well, going off that info it looks like you have it narrow down pretty good. I would put a gauge on the rail, you can't go by listening to a pump. With a gauge on the rail, cranking, if you get no pressure then you are going to be looking in the fuel pump area. You said you had spark the whole time so that shouldn't be an issue, hopefully you used a spark tester wound out to at least 20k.. That being the case the last test would be to go back to the pump and verify power and ground. If you have an old head light, you can do this in one shot. In the connecter, the blue wire is power and the black wire is ground. Just hook the 2 terminals of the light between the power wire and ground wire. Have some one turn the key to the on position and the light should light up for 2 seconds and go off. If light is real bright, your power & ground are good. You could use a test light for this but a headlight put a real good load on the circuit...

alright so, thanks for all the help but i now know the cause of my problems...blown head gasket...there's coolant in the the fuel lines which im would "assume" is a very bad thing anyways if anybody has any suggestions or ideas for top end rebuild i would be open to any...looking mainly to maximize performance but not get too terribly pricey

Coolant in the fuel lines? I don't think so. In the cylinder maybe. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

While reading your symptoms my thoughts where... blown head gasket, blown head, or you need a new gas cap. I too have just blown a head gasket. Luckily, the only problem I had was white smoke coming out of tail pipe and after about 20 minutes of messing with things trying to figure it out, smoke started coming from underneath the heat shield. I didn't crack my head luckily, but my car has been parked since the smoke starting to come from under the shield. With your car cutting off, I personally would have them check your head to make sure you didn't crack it. As far as I know you (we) have to have our head milled before replacing the gasket. Maybe one of the guys here can tell us. I am doing this myself so any tricks, tips, or help would be appreciated.

It always amazes me how some can come to this site being totally lost with issues on their own car and asking for help yet they feel qualified to give advise on other peoples problems. There was nothing in this person's question that even hinted at a head gasket issue.
