'96 buick century speedometer & transmission Sign In

1996 Buick Century, 3.1 6 cylinder, 155,000 miles

I have a 25 yr old son who left the state for a job last August. He abandoned his '96 Buick Century in our driveway. He owes me money! :-) I got lazy over the winter and put off selling the car until this week. The battery was dead so I jumped it. Drove the care for a mile or so but the battery did not hold enough charge to restart the car. While driving I noticed the speedometer did not work and the transmission would not go in to the last gear, like it was stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear. The battery is 5 years old and I'm wondering if the battery being so low could effect how the transmission and speedometer work? The speedometer and transmission worked fine in late October or early Nov., the last time I started and drove the car. Any help is greatly appreciated - Thanks, Tom

1996 means something which mean the car is OBDII and highly computerized. If batteries are left dead they are dead for good even if newer than that. New battery and charge it still first is the first step IMO,

Well, I got a new battery and that didn't take care of the probelm. I had a friend put it on a machine and got an error code of 502, which is the speed sensor, and have now replaced that. The speedometer still does not work and the transmission sticks in 2nd or 3rd gear. HELP !!!! I'm thinking there could be a broken wire or the "tooth thingy" (what is it called?) that the speed sensor reads is broken. What should I do now? Thanks!
