96 Toyota Camry - No Crank, No Start Sign In

Hi all.

Yesterday morning I hopped in my 96 Camry to drive over to my parents'. It started with no issues, but I only got about a block before it suddenly died. I tried to restart it, but the engine wouldn't turn over. I pushed it over to the side of the road, and popped the hood. I noticed a sizeable amount of oil that had apparently leaked from the oil filter. I checked the oil level and it seemed to be low. I wondered if the level was too low and the engine might have seized, but the oil pressure light has not been on at all and it was running fine up until yesterday morning.

This morning I went back to try the car again. When I turn the key all of the electronics come on, and there's a whirring sound (which I'm guessing is the starter motor trying to turn the engine over), but the engine doesn't engage. I checked the oil again, and it shows a decent level (about 2/3 on the dipstick).

This is what it sounds like when I turn the key: https://soundcloud.com/davidmshepherd/car-not-cranking

I'm not sure what the issue is as most advice for a non-cranking engine involves looking at the starter, and I don't think that's my issue.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I don't hear the starter in your capture. Do you have a digital volt meter or 12 volt test lamp? You should first check the battery connections. Make sure they are clean and tight. Do a visual of everything under the hood.

Ok. I had thought the whirring sound I was hearing was the starter motor. So I should be hearing something else?

My dad's got a volt meter. I'll have to have him swing by and try testing the starter.

If that is the starter motor running, it doesn't sound like it has much resistance on it. Maybe the timing belt broke.
