96 Honda Civic EX Violent Shaking Sign In

This problem with my Honda Civic started yesterday and has progressed significantly since then.

My check engine light came on yesterday, but I didn't notice any problems with the car initially. Later in the day, I could feel the car jump slightly at around 55mph. It felt like maybe it was misfiring.

Today I had to take a 150 mile trip and the car started shaking violently and getting progressively worse throughout the day. The shaking starts around 50mph and is pretty bad until I get to 60 mph, then it mellows out some. It's a whole body shake and not just the steering wheel. I went painfully slow most of the trip to try and minimize damage.

The car has 75k miles on it and has all original parts, except for spark plugs which were changed a few months ago. Any ideas what the problem could be? Thanks

Re: 96 Honda Civic EX Violent Shaking Sign In

It wasn't real smart to head out on a 150 mile trip after the check engine light came on.

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.
