95 corsica ... HELP Sign In

i just acquired my moms old car from my niece.. the key switch was stiff and not wanting to return back to the lock position { i had to use pliers to turn it off }.. i removed the steering wheel etc.. to get to the key switch.. i got it free to move back and forth got it put all together except the steering wheel and airbag.. i connected the battery and now everything comes one without the key in.. i try to start it and nothing... what did i do wrong... and 2 does the airbag have to be installed for the car to start.. any help would be appriciated.. should i just replace the column.. its a tilt and i do know where one is but i would rather not spend the money if i dont have to

Re: 95 corsica ... HELP Sign In

I'm a little confused on the description here & exactly how far you tore this down.......usually when installing a key switch, it will only go in one way....Now if you had the rack apart, that's a whole different story, the gears need to be timed right or you can get problems similar to what you are getting, or it's possible you got one the gears to jump when you used the pliers.........

Those are just a couple of guesses......but to get to the gears you will have to take the tilt apart which takes a pin puller.....It's up to you if you feel like tearing the column apart......

For the future.......

Modules don't like it when some of the sensors & whatnot are disconnected & then they are powered up.....Airbag modules especially....They make tools call "airbag simulators" (basically a resisor with the proper connector) to hook in to the SRS harnesses if for whatever reason you need to power up a car with the airbag removed....

You need to be really really carefully when you are working on a system that can seriously hurt you if you do something wrong or at the wrong time....

You need to understand that these have killed people when they have been deployed at the wrong time.....

Just realize what you are working on and think very carefully before plugging something in or hooking something up.....

Re: 95 corsica ... HELP Sign In

The airbag shouldn't disable the car...I'm assuming it won't crank???..... Is the security light flashing???

You can try a 10 minute relearn. Turn the key to the on position and leave there or at least 10 minutes....If the security light goes solid, then try to start the car.....

Just a quick shot in the dark.....You caught me right before I logged off....

If you try the 10 minute relearn, hook up a charger so the battery doesn't go dead.....You may have to try this up to 3 times to get it to work.....

Re: 95 corsica ... HELP Sign In

Sounds like you either broke the ignition lock or installed it wrong.
