hey guys i need some advice. My car surges and jerks back and forth when i accelerate. when i shift into second it gets bad and third and on up. I'm trying to figure out if it needs a tune up or fuel filter. my rear differentials are leaking too, dont know if that would do it? it hesitates and has terrible pick up when you step on it. i just took it to tuffys and they said it's fine, no codes. i'm like yeah go drive it dude and tell me it's fine. so anyway i'm just trying to figure out where to start. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Start by doing a visual inspection.
Have you pulled any spark plugs out and inspected them? Pull some spark plug boots off the coils and inspect the coil towers for corrosion. You see any rusted coil towers, you need to replace the coil and the wires.
If you don't know when the fuel filter was replaced, probably wouldn't be a bad idea to change it. Wires do wear out, so any flash burns or excessive resistance means the wires should be replaced.
Where is the rear end leaking? Is it leaking from the axle seals, the rear cover, and/or the pinion seal?
Keep in mind if this thing has been misfiring a lot, you could have a melted converter causing an exhaust restriction.
You could have shorting going on in the fuel injectors' windings or even clogging going on. The only way to test for shorted injector coils and be accurate about it is by using an oscilloscope to current ramp them. You can use an ohm meter, but sometimes that can be inconclusive because your checking them when they aren't operating. Cleaning them using a sonic parts cleaner can yield good results.

I have not pulled any plugs yet. i just flushed and filled the radiator because i took the cap off and it was packed with gunk. previous owner never did any of this upkeep Sh!t so it started overheating so i decided to address that first, haven't had the car long so next step i guess is fuel filter, plugs and wires and the rear end. it's leaking out the cover with the big bolts in it, i hear thats no big deal to fix. car has 160,000 on it, that's a long time to neglect a lot of important things.

and i got a question for you, would exhaust restriction present itself as a load pop coming from the front engine compartment. it sounds like its coming from the exhaust where it connects to the engine. it does it when im trying to accelerate the car jerks 3-4 times then a big pop and then it starts to speed up. at about half speed though.
