95 Jeep grand Cher. Lorado heater doesn't blow out hot air when foot is off the gas Sign In

1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 8 cyl. 200,000 miles
My Jeep doesn't blow hot air when foot is off the gas such as when I stop at a stop sign or just sitting idling or when driving and I take foot off gas to slow down. I tried adding coolant but that only made it overflow.

Overflowed when added coolant? Where did you add and how much meaning radiator itself or recovery bottle.

Since it works with higher RPM my guess is if it's truly full and vapor free inside that water pump impeller could be weak/corroded or anything restricting flow with less water flow of higher RPM.

Second guess is this may be putting combustion gasses now slight into cooling system via bad head gasket and associated problems such that it really isn't full of coolant and vapor just can't transfer heat vs liquid. You don't want that but need to know if applicable,

I added to both places and used about a full gallon

Also the air conditioning doesn't work. I was told when it did work that water leaked onto the passenger side floor

OK - New urgent suggestion if you could add a whole gallon is to find out where it is leaking NOW!

Pressure test would or should find this easily OR if hose or recovery tank even radiator cap is faulty could be sending out expanded coolant as it should but NOT draw it back as it should would both explain overflowing and low coolant.

If you pressure check and it really is a head gasket issue, especially if you see the pressure drop take spark plugs out instead of cranking as it could be hydraulic locked and you don't want more damage. You could also turn engine by crank bolt and see if it stuck. All maybees and the precaution as if liquid is trying to compress in a cylinder with that test it can't so either it stops there or breaks something nasty!

Truth is without some careful checking and tools to do it unless obvious where a leak is send it out with a description of what you've noticed for professional help as more damage isn't worth DIYing in a worst case scenario.

Low coolant is near certainly the heater issue but much more important to find out where.

Some place to just observe if no equipment,

* Put finger under water pump vent holes as applicable and hoses. Mirror can help.
* Anything that holds coolant, radiator on to heater core itself but that would near certainly have you with a wet floor and stink inside already with strange fogging of windows.

No time to waste, find it while there's a chance it isn't a disaster,

A/C not working is likely all different than the coolant leak. Putting water to floor when it did is about always a clogged drain tube. This is a separate problem from coolant loss which is much more important for the moment,

The temp. gage also goes down when I push on the accelerator

Temp gauge on this should be stable all the time once warmed up and NOT surprised with the leaking/loss of coolant. It's no doubt just low and higher RPM can push what's in it better but the problem is THERE!

Not joking, you are on the edge of losing this engine never mind other things until leak is found and decide on the approach from there. It won't have A/C or run to warm up at all if this is ignored is where I'm coming from.

I'm off line for a while. Others may and will chime in with thoughts but if I were you I'd be out looking for an obvious leak right now,
