95 Camry Poor Acceleration Sign In

Year: 1995
Make: Toyota
Model: Camry
Engine: 2.2L
Mileage: ~98000

Lately, I've notice some strange behavior from the car.

When the car is started well, the RPM's shoot up high and stay a little bit above 1000. This is when the car feels really smooth and the acceleration is very powerful and nice. I also notice its a lot more fuel efficient as well.

Sometimes, on a bad start, it idles really rough until I switch it on Drive and drive for a little bit.

Most of the time, after a while when the car is considered warmed up, the RPM's in idle go below 1000 and the car starts to feel unresponsive and less powerful. Pretty much the opposite to on a good start.

Is this battery related? IAC valve? Camshafts? (All guesses)

Any kind of advice or help is very much appreciated!

FYI, I do not know much about cars but I am currently learning.

Please use simple terms.

Thank you!

Check engine light on?

How are the plugs and wires? Pull the spark plug boots out of the plug wells and inspect for oil contamination. Take the distributor cap off and inspect for oil in the distributor from a faulty shaft seal.

Re: 95 Camry Poor Acceleration Sign In

Check engine light is not on.

Checked the distributor cap and no oil inside but there was some on the outside rim on the bottom. I couldn't tell if there was oil in the distributor itself since I couldn't remove the rotor.
Cleaned the distributor cap with a brush.

Took a look at the spark plugs and changed all four of them and found the second one to be in oil. It doesn't seem to have oil on the plug boots though.

After that, I started the car and the car idled poorly.

Sorry it took a while to reply back. Didn't have much time to check on the car.

Thanks for the help!

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to change the plug wires, cap, and rotor if they have some age and mileage on them. The oil leak is probably from the valve cover tube grommet. The way to fix that is to replace the valve cover gasket and tube grommets. It's really an easy job.

I'll keep that in mind and change them out. I know what the valve cover gasket is but what are you referring to when you say tube grommets?
Where are they located?

What other maintenance operations would you advise to do to get the car back to near factory condition in terms of performance and better MPG?
There has been rarely any kind of maintenance done on this car since I don't know what needs to be done. The engine is near that 100K mark.

Thanks!

He means the tubes that your spark plugs go down into, theres little rubber O-rings that seal the tubes to the valve cover.
