94 Ford Explorer - Car won't turn! Sign In

Just went out and started the car, got in reverse and started backing out. I heard a bit of a clunking noise (like something was falling out under the car) and didn't think much of it, then realized that the wheel was hard to turn and that the car wasn't turning. The battery light was on and didn't go off, I put the car in drive and got back in my parking spot.

There's nothing that I can see that was hanging down from the car, nor was there anything I might have hit/ran over.

What the heck could be wrong with the car and how much do you think it would cost to be fixed?
I'm freaking out a little since we bought the car two months ago from a family friend and he had the transmission overhauled, new tires, car drove great. The only problem I've had to deal with is getting a new starter, my husband is going to freak out when he gets home and I tell him this piece of news. The car is a 4 wheel drive and has about 175,000 miles on it.

Thanks so much for any help you can provide, I really appreciate it.
=) Megan

Battery light and no power steering at the same time. I bet the belt broke off or a pulley is bad causing it to slip way too much or break the belt. Check all the pulleys with belt off and be sure it's plenty tight enough thru self adjuster,

Yes, turns out the serp belt was broken but it was due to the pulley being broken, Ford sent over the part but it didn't fit. I ended up having to replace a bigger part, but Ford gave me a discount, so if this happens to anyone else, beware.
