94 Chevy Silverado Stalling - What could cause this? Sign In

Hi there,

I'm new to this thread. I have a 1994 Chevy Silverado that up until a few days ago was running beautifully. It started stalling out whenever I come to a full stop or try to start going again coming out of a complete stop. It doesn't turn right over when I try to start it, I have to put it into park and try starting again pumping the gas to get it to turn over and start up again. After I finally get it to start back up it spits out black smoke. The next day, on my way out to get it to my mechanic, it stalled out on me at high speeds on the freeway. What could be causing this? I have it in the shop now but they are having a hard time trying to get the truck to recreate the problem...they have hooked it up and done a diagnostic but so far nothing is coming back as abnormal. any suggestions as to what the problem could be and advice is welcome.

Thank you!

The engine may think it's stone cold all the time and flooding out. I believe you can just hold gas pedal to floor and it should clear the flooding then find out why. Could be a silly coolant temp sensor or wiring to it giving it wrong info,

Yes, it could be many things. The temp sensor is one of them. Can't tell you a whole lot because you never posted an engine size.
Is the check engine light coming on at all?

Its a k1500 5.7L engine. The check engine light flicks on then off. By the time it goes in its off. The "Check gauges" light also flicks on then off as soon as I get it in. I was advised to buy a new/salvaged gauge cluster that reads true because the one currently in the truck doesn't read 100% true all the time (ex. Gas gauge is 1/4 off, and speedometer is approx 5-10mph off). That part has just come in, not installed yet though....Does that help narrow it down a little? What do you think it could be?

You need to have it scanned for stored trouble codes and post the numbers of any you find here.
