94 Chevy Astro Van Headlights won't work, please help.

Posting this for my husband. Our 94 Chevy Astro van's headlights won 't work. Turned on headlights at night while driving, they began to flicker on and off for about 3 minutes. Then husband pulled headlight switch by steering column and the headlights worked for about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes they totally shut off, no highbeam, no lowbeam, nothing. All other lights work, parking lights work, emergency, blinker, tail all work.
Checked all fuses, fuse box and all are okay. Checked 2 circuit breakers by listening for rattle, no rattle. Checked headlights themselves as well.
If it matters, fuel pump relay was partially melted, replaced fuel pump relay. Van starts but no headlights. On very limited budget. This is are only vehicle and we need to repair it as soon as possible as I (wife) am pregnant. Any help and advice on how to fix this is greatly appreciated. It would require some electrical testing but you may find a bad combination switch in the steering column.
