94 Beretta Starting Problems Sign In

Ok so.. I have a 94 Beretta with a 2.2l engine... everytime I try to start the car after it's been sitting for more than 4 hours and has had a chance to cool down it starts like crap. It sputters and occasionally stalls on me unless I have my foot on the gas for about 20 seconds... After the car is completely warmed up it runs perfectly... nearly silent. I'm completely at my wits end with this car. I've replaced nearly everything... I've completely checked the engine over for vacuum leaks and found nothing. It has a new fuel filter, new fuel pump, new injector o-rings, I had the injectors professionally cleaned, there are no check engine codes, replaced idle sensor, replaced both temperature sensors, has new spark plugs and wires... I don't know where to go from here. The next place I was going to go was replacing the coil packs... The engine also has a slight hesitation when taking off from idle... sometimes I push on the gas and the engine doesn't go right away.. it's like it waits a second then takes off like a champ speeding off to nowhere. When I start my car in the morning sometimes it can run like crap for up to 2 minutes... I'll be flooring it down the road and only be going about 15mph if I'm lucky. It's like it's running on 2 cylinders and then all of a sudden it catches and then runs perfectly. I really don't know what to do about this car.. I've had this problem for over a year and no shop will look at it with the problem I've described to them for under $100 which just isn't acceptable on a minimum wage Kmart salary. I love my car but I've spent over $600 in the course of a year trying to diagnose it. There's a reason we named her misery. Other than the starting problem everything else is fine on this car. I maintain it perfectly and never neglect it.. I just don't understand what's going wrong with it right now. Anybody have a suggestion?

Pre '96 codes are tricky. Throwing parts at it can and will be a waste and confuse the fix. Seems like this car always thinks it's warm and proper adjustments not made.

Please stop guessing. The silly money for pro diagnosis will save you and correct this in the long run a bargain,

T

I'm going to add that one to the quote hall of fame.............LOL

Paying someone that knows what they are doing $100 to diagnose it properly is out oif the question but throwing $600 worth of parts at it without fixing it is a better idea?

I have a feeling that absolutely nobody here is going to actually help me. While I was at work my mother took my car into the shop without telling me... Hopefully they'll actually manage to fix it.. I hope she plans on paying for it because I am not.

Does the car feel like it has a misfire like loosing 1 or 2 cyls or does it seem to run rich like spewing black or white smoke out of the exaust ?

Mega: We (speak for myself) + others in fact anyone are here to help you - no games. Regulars try to direct you to problem area but that's really the most we can do without being there.

IMO - You are spending $$ but not hitting the target problem. Not here to tell you what to do - all suggestions are just that with car repair.

You claim you can fix anything - Lots of stuff - let a pro diagnose and then DIY it - no problem.

All are volunteers here. Free site with pros to help or anyone's suggestions.

Everyone (seemingly) is here to save some bucks or joy of DIY - So far you are wasting money IMO,

T

OH, and such a loving son too!.........

At least someone in the family has some common sense and recognizes their limitations.
