93 Grand Marquis died on highway, battery light still on after replaced altenator Sign In

Hello. My 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis died on the highway after the battery "alternator?" light coming on about 20 minutes prior. We replaced the alternator with a rebuilt and the light is STILL ON. Car starts with a boost, but dies shortly after. Took the rebuilt alternator out, went back to same mechanic and he rebuilt my original alternator and supposidly put on a new voltage regulator. Put it in car...LIGHT STILL ON. We are stumped. What could the problem be? Car has 220,000 km on a 4.6 ltr engine.

Connections anywhere but especially at starter motor. Battery cable both ends of each. I think there's a whole harness for the starter motor for this that could be messed up/corroded.

What voltage output do you have now after what has already been done?

Battery itself: Get it tested and begin with a full charge and known still good,

Thankyou for your quick reply..not sure how to do a voltage test. I have a multimeter but dont understand what to do with it. My Dad does all his mechanical work old school....Im wondering if it could still be the alternator/voltage and maybe the guy didnt test it at all? My Dad says the alternator is also making noise. Also...does this car have an alternator fuse or fuseable links that we should be looking at?

This model had a problem with the regulator connector. They sell a replacement connector/pigtail. Have alt tested for output by a parts house that has the corrrect load tester. Have batt charged and tested at same time.Starting eng wuth a dead batt is a sure way of killing an alt. Heres a pic of connnector.............1993 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS Voltage Regulator Connector

Note about actual voltage: You can get a digital thing that just goes in a power port and reads actual ongoing voltage to the decimal point for about $12 bucks and don't even need to open the hood. That or a cheap multimeter would do,

Made by Vector and sold at major chain parts stores........
