92 Toyota Camry / Scepter shudders then gradually loses acceleration power while driving until restart. Sign In

Hi There,

I have a 92 Toyota Camry / Scepter with 236,635 kms / 147,038 miles. V6 I think. Automatic Transmission.

Recently it has been losing power when driving so I have had to be using the "L" & "2" gears usually to get moving after taking off from lights and

signs. But last night after driving for about 10 mins it stopped working ie: the power from the gears wasn't even there and it kind of shudders, so I

stopped and restarted and made it home about 3 mins away.

Today I left home and after 3 mins of driving in kind of starts to shudder when slowing down and no gear gives power, so I stop the engine and restart

again, then this cycle repeats. It seems to start fine but starts to shudder after a few minutes then the acceleration has no effect.

Also, the engine light was on so I checked the engine code with the diagnosis box but it flashes continuously meaning there is no problem - so why is on

to begin with?

Anyway, as you can probably tell I don't really know anything about cars and I would be very grateful if you could tell me what you think may be the

problem

Thanks!

First off know most of us are US based and may lack any specifics for your car.

Using the shifter to choose a different selection than drive because the car lacks power isn't really helping anything and there aren't many situations you would use more than drive to move forward and let it decide.

1992 would be OBDI or the first generation on board diagnostics and any check engine light being on means a problem exists. No clue what your code reader is trying to tell you but need more help than that. What instructions come with the device and what stays blinking the device or the car's warning light?

This IMO should really be taken in to a professional for at least a diagnosis of the problem(s) and you should read the owner's manual on how to drive this car. If you are unsure of whether it's a 4 or 6 cylinder engine and using low gears for more power I think you need to understand how it's supposed to work first and when you might use other selections and for what reasons.

So far I can only see you know it lacks power and has a warning light on. That's enough to take it in for inspection, diagnosis and estimate of repair and ask for any missed services and a general check out for an old car now but you would follow maintenance suggestions also in owner's manual for any for best service.

You are probably risking total harm to catalytic converter now if not all or part of the problem you are having it will be if you continue to drive it with a problem like it has,

Thanks for that,

yeah I only started using the gears because It seemed to be the only thing that helped, my gut kinda told me to get it checked but I'm a bit broke.

I don't have the manual but I will try to find a copy.

Thanks for mentioning the catalytic converter, that is one thing I found that may be sigifnicant when searching Google, so you saying that helps.

Will definitely take to a professional.

Thanks again.

Just some notes and suggestions on owning a vehicle of any type or age:

They are all costly or take efforts to keep in shape: Scary how many folks lose or toss out the owner's manuals that are boring but have info on service intervals and how controls operate specific to the car plus fluid types and capacities not always as quick and easy to find.

Time and miles/kilometers count and should suggest intervals based on the way a vehicle is used. All easy longer trips in fair weather or lots of stop and go short trips things get done more often.

The warning lights and gauges you should know each vehicle what they mean and what to do about when one stays illuminated. Some will say check that soon and others means shut it off ASAP and do NOT drive any more till tended to! Know the difference.

1992 - Stickers may be missing or unreadable. Under hood decals should say which engine you have and other info as well as info frequently on driver's door jam area if original to that car.

Important things age and need attention lots newer than this car and may be on second, third or forth time around for certain items to be changed. Plain rubber hoses that carry engine vacuum for assorted reasons crack, get broken and need to stay attached to what they do and common to fail over time and use.

Owners should know basics on their vehicles. Fluids and types plus how to check them. Tire pressure and proper sizes. Know spare tire pressure and how to change a flat tire properly and about 10,000 more things but at least the basics.

Take the web info you may find with caution. It's handy and can be fast but nothing really beats being there in person showing you things and knowing if something is wrong if YOU can do something OR when it should go to professionals who should have tools, equipment and the experience to help you.

Almost any issue waiting or delaying a fix will make the problem worse, more expensive or fatal to the car up to plain dangerous to continue using it at all!
