I have a 92 Buick Park Avenue with a 3.8L V6 with about 140K miles on it. The car is equipped with rear ABS but the ABS hydraulic unit has been non functional for a quite some time with no adverse braking results. A few days ago I was forced to slam on my brakes to avoid a car sliding through an intersection, noticing no braking issues during or just after. A couple hours later I was driving home and noticed a spongy feeling to the brakes when I was exiting the freeway and coming to a stop. I pumped the brakes and the sponginess went away during the rest of my drive home. The final stretch of my drive consists of driving 35-40MPH stop and go traffic and experienced no spongy feeling to the brakes but once I get traveling at speeds of 50MPH and higher the sponginess returned. The brakes were inspected about 2 months ago and all was fine and I performed a visual inspection of the brake system and saw no leaks. I am at a loss as to what this behavior is symptomatic of because the brakes are firm when driving at low speeds and there is no loss of hydraulic pressure while keeping my foot on the brake at a stop, the sponginess only occurs while braking at higher speeds. Any help would be appreciated.

Is the Master cylinder low on fluid?

The fluid levels are at the proper level and there has been no noticeable drop in the level in the master cylinder.

That means your pressure is bypassing at either the master cylinder or the ABS hydraulic unit. It's usually the master.
