92 Ford Tempo GL knocking noise within belt system Sign In

This 1992 Ford Tempo GL has the serpentine belt system. So, the waterpump, a/c, power steering, crankshaft, and alternator are all connected to this one belt. Okay, when I start the motor, it has a small knocking noise when it's in park. If you put it in gear, the noise gets worse. Now, if you speed the motor up, the knock is completely gone. Let off the gas, and the knock starts right back up again.

I took the belt off completely, and then started it up. No knock whatsoever. So that told me it wasn't in the actual motor itself. Just something in the belt system. Now, here's where I'm lost. I can't figure out what is making the noise. I have tried a new water pump, two new idler pullies, and a new tensioner pulley. They are all connected to the belt system as well. The only other options I have left are the crankshaft, a/c, power steering, or the alternator.

Anyone have any idea as to what to try next? I am just lost and getting a little aggravated because it seems like every part I replace doesn't help it. Could it be the bearings in the crankshaft?

Sounds like a bad harmonic balancer. It's a 2 piece pulley joined by rubber and the rubber can tear and allow the outer pulley to move on the inner

Hmm, any idea as to how I should go about replacing that part?

You need a puller to remove it. You may be able to rent one at an AutoZone.
You also need an impact gun to get the bolt off.
Verify it is broken first though.

Sorry for asking so many questions, but I'm just new to working on cars. Where will I find the harmonic balancer and how can I tell if it's broke?

Take it to a shop. This is beyond your ability.

I don't see in your post where you ever put a new belt on it (maybe I missed it)......I'm guessing you have so HT's suggestion is on the money then....

If for some crazy reason you didn't try a new belt in addition to the other new stuff, grab a can of carb clean & spray the belt while the engine is running, if the noise goes away, put a new belt on it.........

Sorry about that, yes indeed I did try a new belt as well. I'm fairly sure I can do it. I just need to know exactly what I'm looking for.

Re: 92 Ford Tempo GL knocking noise within belt system Sign In

Like HT said, you want to inspect it 1st and make sure this is in fact your problem.

It's mounted on the end of the crankshaft (bottom pulley) It's straight foward, take the crank bolt off (requires an impact gun or a way to hold the crank from moving) get a harmonic balance puller & remove it (it's pressd onto the crankshaft). Not the worse one to do but not the easiest either, it's tight with little room to work..

Oh okay, yeah. I know what you are talking about now. When I take it off, what exactly am I looking to be wrong with the harmonic balancer?

Re: 92 Ford Tempo GL knocking noise within belt system Sign In

It's a 2 piece design with a rubber piece in between the 2 ring pieces. You just looking for rubber sticking out, broken, misalignment between the 2 pieces.......
