Hi. Working on my son's 92 Dodge Stealth ES 3.0 DOHC fwd. Two cyls have no spark. Tried new and moving coils; no spark follows power wire to one of coil positions. Tried new ECU from eBay.
Finally, I carefully followed the on-line testing procedure for Power Transistor Unit and was surprised that it appears to check out okay. Now thinking:
I've made an error in testing the PTU.
Or there is a break in the wire powering the bad coil position (seems unlikely)

Any ideas before I assume PTU is bad and spend $50 on a used one?
This appears to be a known problem.

Thanks much,

Jim

Which cylinders have no spark?

Don't recall and not at car. I'll get that info asap in the next day or two. Out of town now.

I do know it was the two cyl coming off which ever coil I ran the dead power wire to.. (ie I could move the problem around) originally the centre coil, I believe.

Thanks for reply.

Kind of hard to help you if your away from the vehicle. Really need to know which coil your dealing with. Plus it is hard to test things if your not at the vehicle.

I'm at the car.

It is the rear coil not firing cyl 5 and 6.

There is no coil that fires 5/6

They are 1/4 2/5 3/6

Ah. Okay pulled cover. One plug wire from dead coil goes to cyl at front of engine (and car, in this case) immediately behind camshaft pulley and left when facing engine (right head of engine itself) so #... 1?
other wire goes to either of front-most or centre cyl on other side (intake in the way).

Great! Thanks. So coil 1/4 is not firing.

Swap it with another one and see if the miss follows it.

As in my original post, I've done that and it follows the power lead to the coil. This apparently suggests on the dohc 3.0 that the Power Transistor is bad. Thing is, followed the procedure to bench-test the PTU and it checked out, oddly.

That test won't tell you if one driver is burnt out.

A driver being internal to the ptu? ie you think the ptu is likely bad?

Yes, I do. The driver is the grounding transistor that actually operates that coil from within the module, assuming the wiring between them is good.

Huh! Interesting. I re-read the test. So the unit has both grounding transistors and power transistors? If so, bummer that this test isn't conclusive, ie tests everything in the unit or doesn't point that out (!).

Is it realistic to attempt a repair of the bad transistor in the unit; I have an electronics wizard friend.

Either way, thanks a lot for your time. Can I compensate you or donate to something on your behalf? Getting my boy's car going will make him a happy guy, there being no better satisfaction for a Dad. He likes this sometimes troublesome car and that's what matters. :-)

No, we all volunteer our time here to help people out.
I don't think repairing that is an option. They are encased in a gel and getting a schematic would be impossible.

Roger. Well thank you!

There was a used PTU available online last time I looked. It'll take as much as a few weeks but I'll let you know how we make out.

Be careful with that stuff. You can be burned real easy. I don't like used electronics.

Yep, I hear you.

Just got your reply and have since ordered a used one off eBay. I'm in Canada, cheapest new was $212.
Hoping for the best and will chaulk it up to experience if not.
Can you recommend a jobber for this kind of stuff that ships here?

Received used PTU from N. Carolina and it has solved the problem! Car runs on 6 cyl again. When I told my boy, who is away at school, he said he was bouncing off the walls.

Thanks for your help and patience.
