My 91 ford f150 started spittin and sputtering as i was going up a hill about a month ago. I dont use truck much but when i do anytime i try to get a little power out of it the trucks just cuts out sometimes it dies. I'm planning on picking up fuel filter and line removal tool today in order to change fuel filter. I'm hoping this works but if not my next step is the fuel pump. My problem is if changing the fuel filter doesn't fix it then i don't know what pump to replace. I have two tanks both are steel a long thin one located in the middle of the truck and a square one in back. All the video i've seen online show the back tank pump getting changed but what about the front tank pump is there not two pumps. I think my back tank has a slight leak so i've only used my front tank for years but i switched to back tank and the problem exists no matter what tank i'm running on.

A fuel filter will never be the sole cause of a driveability issue. It will contribute to ruining a pump if it's plugged but a filter alone won'e fix anything.

The first thing you need to do is put a fuel pressure gauge on it and find out if you have a fuel issue or not. If the pressure is withing spec, then you need to check volume.

Please ignore the previous post. There is no such thing as a one way check valve in the fuel pressure regulator.
