1991
Toyota
MR2
2.2l NA
3.3k on motor, 274k on chasis

I have a 1991 Toyota MR2 AT/NA with a rebuilt motor...this is what happened to me when i last drove the car and when it broke down.

I had been able to drive the MR2 around, on and off, for about 3 weeks, maybe a month. I had a grounding issue on my negative battery cable which i fixed by putting a new negative cable on it and moving the ground to the bolt in front of the negative cable where the frame for the plastic meets the chasis.

So on a monday morning, i drop off my lil sister at school like i had been doing the prior weeks, and ran a few errands and went home. About 2 later, i went to leave again, and i try start the car and this happens...

I try to start the car, and the starter just clicks as if the battery was dead...which i thought was weird. So i take the key out of the ignition and the start is still clicking...my temp gauge shoots to Hot and pegs out, and a couple of my dash lights are blinking irratically, mainly just flickering. So i run outside and i disconnect the battery and everything stops. Im confused beyond all hell at this point. So i hook everything up and try to start the car again, and again starter clicking and i pull the key...temp gauge shoots to Hot, and im watching my gauges to make sure nothing else happens. Well i eventually see my needle on my speedo melt off and then that gauge start smoking. I immediately disconnect the battery again.

I wait for some friends to arrive as i figured that 3 heads are better than 1, and we go through the whole routine again. This time i smell gas, i look underneath the car and it seems to be from the placement of the fuel filter. We cut everything off and we start looking around the bay. My one friend disconnects the vacuum line from the valve cover and we see gas just start pouring out of it. We take the airbox piping out and gas just starts flowing out of the intake manifold!!! I had gas leaking from my airbox NOT my fuel filter like i thought. We then rehooked everything back up to see if it was the cold start injector or not to see if we can get more gas to come out of the intake. As we got everything to replicate, my other friend noticed that my CC throttle cable was smoking, he went to see if it was actually the cable or something under the cable that was causing the smoke and he got a nice part of his skin burned pretty badly. We then realized that we had electricity hitting the motor somewhere and we cut everything off and left it at that.

I do not know where to go from here. I replaced the ignition switch thinking that the switch might not be disengaging
seeing as there were fuel and electrical current in the engine bay, but after replacing the switch, nothing changed.
I do know that this is a car problem not an MR2 problem as my uncle had the sort of the same scenario happen to his old station wagon, but he did not remember what the cause or the solution was.

anything that can give me a lead will be greatly appreciated!
thank you

This is just my opinion but .......

You're dealing with something that you shouldn't be.
You have leaking fuel with a good possibility of an ignition source for the fuel.
Someone already got burned...

LEAVE THE BATTERY CABLES DISCONNECTED,CLOSE THE HOOD,GET AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE AND CALL A TOW TRUCK AND TAKE IT TO A QUALIFIED SHOP BEFORE SOMETHING REALLY SERIOUS HAPPENS TO YOU AND/OR YOUR FRIENDS.

AGAIN,
JUST MY OPINION
