Greetings,

I have a 91 honda civic that I was taking up a small hill on the interstate last week, traveling about 75 mph in 5th gear. Speed started to gradually drop, so I increase acceleration, at which point it started coughing and hiccuping, complete with complimentary lurches, etc.

I let off the gas and took it out of gear, and the noise stopped. So I put it in fourth gear while maintaining 60-65 MPH in 4th with no issue. So I kicked it into 5th again and it worked fine, until I pressed the gas harder. If I kept it in 5th and only pressed the gas a certain amount, regardless of speed, it would continue to work just fine.

Any ideas or thoughts?

How are the plugs, cap, rotor, and wires? Could be an ignition related misfire that is occurring under heavy engine loads. Also look down into the spark plug wells and make sure they aren't full of oil.

If you have to do the valve cover gasket, might want to do valve lash adjustment while your in there if it hasn't ever been done.

Ok, sorry for the delay. I've been driving it more, and trying to recreate the problem, but it hasn't really happened again.

I'll be going up a hill in 5th a floor it and it will just keep on going. I will check the wires and distributor, etc see if I can see anything amiss.
