91 Crown Vic Pitman Shaft seal replacement Sign In

The saga continues. Same heap, different project.Smile I've got a considerable leak from around the pitman shaft but I can't for the life of me figger out how to get the seal out. According to the ALLDATA exploded view, there is a dust seal, snap ring, oil seal, then the bearing. I looked up inside with a flashlight but can't identify this dust seal and how to get it out. it looks like there is a black rubber grommet at the base of the shaft but I'm a little apprehensive to get up in there and start prying around like some boneloaf backyard mechanic. How do I get to this cotton pickin' oil seal to replace it?

If you’re sure the snap ring isn’t viable then you’re going to have to get that dust seal out of your way.
If you can’t get at it to carefully pry it out, then try drilling a 1/8 hole in the face of the seal. Get a sheet metal screw and thread it into the hole, as you tighten the screw it should pull the seal out
You may end up doing the same for the pressure seal after the snap ring is removed.
I’ve also gotten away with blowing the pressure seal out using the pressure from the pump. Remove the snap ring start up the car and then bounce the steering wheel off of its stop the internal pressure in the bow will push the seal out.

After some thorough cleaning, I was able to peer up in there with a flashlight and a magnifying glass. Lo and behold, I could see the snap ring. I removed the snap ring, which by the way turned into an arduous task because my snap ring pliers were too small for the job. Anyway, after prying the snap ring out I filled the reservoir and started the car, turned the wheel to the stop a couple of times back and forth and the dust seal and inner seal popped out. I tapped in the new seal and finished up the job. I will most likely get this beast road worthy this week and drive it this winter. Then next year it may end up in the derby and look like this when I'm done:

Well, I couldn't think of anything better to do with my ex-wife's car. Wink Had a ball driving it in the derby though.
