90 buick electra no fluid to rear left brake Sign In

Hoping someone here has heard of this issue or had it themselves.
Originally replaced damaged brake line. After replacement, brakes were spongy and forcing right front brake to absorb the full force of the braking.
Bought new brake pads and installed. After installation could not get fluid to the brakes to bleed them . Brakes refuse to move. (believe me this is NOT my first brake job did it right and re-did it just in case after it didn't work) Replaced master cylinder, still nothing. Replaced brake cylinder, nothing. Replaced one of the plastic tubes going from the resevoir . Have held off from replacing the other plastic tube at this point am trying to troubleshoot the issue.
Any suggestions? I am at my wits end. I have never experienced this issue in the past and I change brakes on various makes and models on a regular basis . (the one in the family with mechanical skills , a garage and tools. whoopee for me)

PLEASE NOTE: I have tried bleeding these brakes. I have followed proper procedure in doing so, I am NOT getting fluid to the brake and the pads do NOT move upon depression of brake pedal.

Did you remove the brake bleeder all the way and see if the hole at the bottom is just plugged up with crap?

I assume you bled the master before putting it on. You likely have a proportioning valve that is stuck or bad. it's located down next to the fuel filter. Using a pressure bleeder may be helpful.

I am using a pressure bleeder. It is usually VERY helpful.

I took the proportioning sensor off and cleaned it put it back together. Still nothing.

I am considering blowing out each individual line and starting from scratch.

Are you getting fluid pressure coming into the proportioning valve? You could also have a bad flex hose at the rear wheel.
Your just going to have to find out exactly what point it is that your losing the pressure

Re: 90 buick electra no fluid to rear left brake Sign In

yep had pressure at the perportioning valve.

I also thought it was flex hose (if by flex hose you mean the plastic hose one in front one in back. )
Is it possible that if one of the flex lines are plugged it will affect the brake diagonal (you know, right rear works with left front , and so on)
because the master cyl has four lines. front two lines on the master -bottom on front goes to right rear, top on front goes to the left front. I've been trying to troubleshoot this issue for three days now and I have to tell you I am "compuzzled".

Does this car have ABS?
I'm seeing some models with a diagonal system and some with front/rear. They made both that year.

Nope, Standard braking system .
Disc on front Drum on back.

Because I am having the same issue both on driver front and passenger rear, I am assuming the Haynes manual was right in assuming this is a diagonal system.

This is not impossible. You just have to systematically see where the pressure stops. The flex hose can rupture or swell internally and cause a restriction.

I knew it was possible to rupture or collapse, but if one goes, will it cause the diagonal brake to also malfunction and not get fluid?

Re: 90 buick electra no fluid to rear left brake Sign In

Thanks so much for the help!

We ended up combining help you contributed (about the possible collapsed line) and help we got from over to 2carpros, and finally managed to rectify the situation. here's what he did :

He replaced the flex line on the front (we bought a new one the other night thinking it could be an issue with a collapsed or in some other way damaged flex line, just as you suggested.) Bled the front driver brake, using method suggested on the other site, worked like a charm.
Went to the right rear , started by gravity bleeding to make sure all was well, when it started to drip, he bled that line too. Just to be on the safe side, we bled all four brakes, because in the beginning of the week he replaced the master thinking that was the issue. He is now test driving to make sure it's not just "in the garage ok".

I'm pretty sure we're finally done with this headache. I am SO glad brake system parts for this vehicle aren't expensive, and now I have a brand new braking system, short of one brake line and the rear flex which seem to be healthy at this time.

Thanks again for all the assistance! it was truly appreciated!

Re: 90 buick electra no fluid to rear left brake Sign In

It was the least I could do.

I know I personally hate when I find something that solves the problem,or you must assume it's solved because after the initial information given, nothing more's said.
Now the next person who's stuck will be able to see the whole thing.
Have a good one!!!Wink
