89 camry problem...any ideas?

89 camry problem...any ideas?

89 Toyota Camry 4 door --
2.0l 4 cylinder
about 150K miles
Was driving my car... Then the engine just died.. Pulled over... and never could restart it...
My friend who is decent @ cars said it was a timing belt...
Well looking underneath my hood.... I noticed that oil had been sprayed around the engine..i see it on the hoses, and it looks pretty fresh/wet looking.....
I took a look through a crack of the side panel when we got it loose enough to peak inside.....and could see the timing belt, and while my friend tried to start the car, i could see the belt was spinning, and seemed to be still intact..
so it doesn't look like i lost my belt(i think?)... but definitely something is wrong ...
Any Ideas?

what was happening when it died any symptoms what were you doing . when you try to restart what does it do? click? turns over but does start? doesnt even turn over? dash lights and all electircal work?

i was @ a cruising speed(not accelerating) down the road about 35 mph.. engine died..
When I try to restart... it turns over but doesnt start....
dash lights, power windows, radio, lights all work fine..
I noticed some wetness around the motor... I assume oil....
Think my engine is toast?

If you own a vehicle built from the mid 80's on, it will be fuel injected. If you need to diagnose a starting problem with this vehicle, here is what you need to do before asking us for diagnosis help.
All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.
Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.
These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.
1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.
2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.
3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.
4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.
Once you have determined which of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

also your engine is not an interference engine so no i dont think your engine is fried if you blew a timing belt. its possible you may have jumped some timing but that comes later test using the post above first and come back with your results.
