1987 toyota corolla Whole deal has over 120,000 miles for sure. Replaced the engine with one that has about 45,000 miles. Battery and alternator are new. two years old. Come winter time (seems to happen around this time of year), the battery infrequently drains out. why? This year, it started a week ago, when I went to move my car. The battery was empty, nothing. Got it jumped, charged it for 30 minutes, was fine for about five days. Yesterday it was seeming low, as my radio shut off on its own while driving. Arrived at my destination, stayed for about thirty minutes. Then it had trouble starting, barley enough power to start it. Then my signals weren't working, nothing was lighting up, finally it died as I was driving back home on a major roadway. It just shut off. Had to get it towed. It's safely parked now, but I can only imagine what kind of electrical hell ($$$) i'm dealing with. I'm thinking alternator/wiring issues. Possibly a bad cable from the alternator to the battery? There was a burning rubber smell, just before my car died last. Maybe a belt issue with the alternator? thanks

Then I suggest you call a tow truck and head for the nearest reputable repair shop because you are out of your ability limits. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Might be a good idea to check the alternator's drive belt to be sure it wasn't the cause of the burnt rubber smell. Maybe an accessory locked up or or the belt is loose as a goose. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
