I have an 87 Ford Bronco 5.0 v8, auto trans, 4wd. Im not getting any spark. I have replaced the plugs, coil, cap and rotor, ignition control module, and the egv solenoid and still no spark. asside from the plug wires (which arent bad) what else is there in an ignition system? I know im getting fule because I can hear the pump and smell fuel. What do I do? Can anyone help? this is getting expensive!

Yes. The timing chain is not broken. Thought of that. Any other ideas?

Duh - it's old so subject to odd problems as silly as connections. Try free stuff till nailed down like..........

1. Try just taking dist cap off and blow it out with compressed air.

2. Relay with brown skirt underhood ( think I recall that) on the cars and should be if original can cause no spark problems and should be under some sort of moisture guard. Many times you can just whack them with the handle of a screwdriver and if all works replace it. Not conclusive if that doesn't work but frequently will.

How are you testing for spark? Do that at spark plug ends of plug wires and even if wires had a problem an 8 cyl. engine should still react if most of them are ok.

Just hearing fuel pump is not conclusive if you find any spark just spray some starting fluid into throttle body and put the air hose back on as it might try to backfire at you.

Other: Don't crank too much trying as this should just start right up so if not you are just flooding it complicating diagnosis and hard on starter too so don't add that to the troubles,

He didn't ask you if the timing chain was broken. He asked if the distributor was turning. Did you look?

Just looked at the exact distributor. They use a roll pin on the gear and have heard of those breaking, sliding out or fail and then no rotor turning and no spark,

yes, distributor isturning, which tells me timing chain is notbroken. What about White deposits on spark plugs?

Removing plug, attaching it to plug wire, and grounding t to te block. Usually works if there is spark, but no spark. What about white deposits onplugs?

Nobody said anything about a timing chain and that was not the reason for checking the distributor.

You need to use an adjustable spark tester to monitor exactly what the spark is doing. Then you need to test for power on the "+" side of the coil and pulsing ground on the "-" side of the coil using a noid light.

Perform the tests and post the results here.

Re: 87 Ford bronco spark probs Sign In

The OE relays the plug was also colored and only the right color would fit but they are the same relays when you buy an aftermarket on that will fit any.

Green skirted one was for fuel pump, black/grey was for A/C and I keep a generic spare that will fit any in two of these engines right now and a whole spare distributor with the timing wrench in the trunk out of running cars so I know they work fine.

Hey - on the side of the road I can swap out the whole distributor faster than you can replace the module then set timing exactly later.

We'll find this problem,

If you hear the fuel pump, that means the EEC relay, fuel pump relay, and ECA is alive. That's unless the fuel pump circuit is rigged.

Check for injector pulse? Usually when I get a TFI-IV and it needs an ignition module, it gets the stator along with it.

HT has it right by checking for ignition switch voltage and a trigger at the coil connector.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
