86 Toyota Camry - Leaking coolant: radiator or hose? Sign In

The car was smoking after a 10 minute drive. I looked under the hood and both the radiator and the plastic radiator overflow were both completely empty. I put some water in the radiator and it is quickly leaking out right where the bottom radiator hose is located. I waited a day before doing anything. Today I tightened the ring there and the water would leak slower. When I loosened the ring to try to take the hose off and take a look at it, as I was squeezing the hose there was extra coolant that was green that was coming down out of the hose, so I believe that nothing was wrong with the hose or else all that coolant would have already leaked out. Is this a good assessment or could it still be the hose? Could it be a crack in the radiator?

The 1st thing is....you have a leak and that does need to be fixed.

You've narrowed it down to the lower radiator area, you could have a bad hose, cracked radiator or split seam in the radiator. If it was just a loose clamp the leak would've stopped when you tightened it.

Ideally, you would clean the area, pressurize the system and see where the exact leak is. If you can't see for sure then the best step might be to replace the hose & clamp 1st. If the leak is still there at the bottom of the radiator then that pretty much confirms you have a bad radiator, those plastic ones aren't repairable & would need to be replaced.

You had pretty good logic on the hose expect it's on the bottom & there is also coolant in the block so to get all the green coolant out you would've had to of emptied the system a couple of times and added straight water which would've of been very hard on your engine if this was accomplished by running the engine.
