84 ford van drive shaft carrier bearing

84 ford van drive shaft carrier bearing Sign In

84 ford van 302 automatic tranny...got the two part driveshaft...trying to change the carrier bearing in the middle...took rear shaft off differential but for some reason can't slide in off the splines in the middle...seems should slide off but slide it til I can see the start of the splines on the shaft but can't pull it any further................WHY!!!!!

There should be a removeable a cap holding it from coming all the way off.

there is a cap with a grease fitting in it,,,spins around with a pipe wrench but doesn't appear to be threaded,,,just spins...do I slide that off?? that's gotta come off too to get the carrier bearing off

It either has tabs bent over or it threads off.

If you're doing a hanger bearing you need to unbolt the rear shaft section from that yoke just behind the bearing. Should have strap just like at the diff. Then you take off the yoke and lastly comes the fun of getting a 29 year old bearing off the shaft without damage.

If you have already taken it apart at the slip yoke, realize you cannot simply put it back together any which way. The ends must be installed in phase with each other or you will get a nasty vibration when you drive.
