Hi my name is Zack and i own a 79' continental.
I purchased this car a few years ago from the original owner, i drove it moderately for one summer and have had it sitting for about a year and a half or so.
The car has 66k original miles on it and is really in great shape, except for the scratches that an ex put on it. My plan for this car is a minor restoration (new paint, get the engine running clean, upholster the inside, update electronics).
I am young and do not have a mechanic background but i learn extremely fast and i am mechanically inclined. I am hoping i can query you all out there on some questions, as I have recently got a job back home and will be traveling less on the weekends. I'm now ready to dump some money and time into this baby and get her up to speed.
I have done a few things to it over the years but no very much, ive kept it with new plugs wires, change the oil often, have redone all the cooling hoses and put a new water pump in. the belts were changed right before i took possession of the car.
HOWEVER:
One bad thing that i did is let the car sit for a while with an empty gas tank (four or five months), and i put some gas in it yesterday and started it up. it started fine, i let it idle and warm up before i took it on a short trip to the gas station down the road. when i finally got onto a road with a decent speed limit, and i gave it a lil gas, it kicked fine past first and into second. when it was time to switch to third gear (around 35 mph) it felt like i was mashing the gas and it was loosing power. the car eventually stalled out and i had to throw it in neutral to start it again.
so my first question would be, how should i attack this symptom to fix this problem and get it running, so i can actually make it to the gas tank.

Look down the carb and open the throttle looking for a squirt of fuel as it open. If no squirt, then you have a fuel supply problem and will have to troubleshoot to find it.

Ok, then check spark. Make sure your fuel isn't stale too.
