I have taken it to the dealership and a private mechanic and neither have been able to find the problem.

The rattle sounds as if it is coming from underneath the car around the middle. It rattles the most/loudest when in drive, but breaks are held down such as at a red light or in a drive thru. When you put it in park the rattle loudness is reduced greatly. It doesn't always do it and how loud it is varies. The mechanic thought it might be a shield plate vibrating the axel so he adjusted it, but that made no difference. I have no way to lift the car and it's pretty low to the ground. I'm just not sure of a good solution.

Dealer couldn't duplicate it? This is so under warranty UNLESS it has been hit by something could escape notice. This is STILL strongly the type of noise exhaust parts make usually heat shield from rust later than this big time but could bent.
This is my way to find it maybe with a helper step by step in order with this car type:
1. Find or get a rubber hammer? Yes, now engine off, even cold but when it would do it temp wise of car if it's quiet stone cold. Tap on tail pipe engine off. Listen for any noise and if nothing try to move forward on exhaust doing the same.

* Note: If you need to get under it it's too low will need to lift it by the suspension for the wheels not body like changing a tire. I want duplicate weight of the vehicle thinking it's on wheels or for real if you can do that safely or don't get under anything not sure of that. Keep going and looking.
* Could do this second but tap on exhaust under hood may need some extension of wood don't harm anything just taps to make the noise.

OK: If nothing seen and that doesn't work plus help target item it's back to the dealer drive with a tech and make it do it. If by chance it wont has to do with two people being in it if not tried I'm still focused on exhaust parts - anything to do with it.

If you don't even want to just send it back it's theirs to find and fix. If damage that isn't warranty so get pics and video of it may run into insurance costs?

Good luck if it does it it's just time to find and locate it then what to do about it,

Yes, always helps to have a helper to swap tapping and other isolate the noise.
While back - if you get a clean area (cold pipes/parts) grab by hand make it stop. Need 3 hands maybe.

I find most of these if you find damage to light metal only and it's on you let me know there are total ways to fix stuff that isn't hard depending actually better than OE discuss that depending on what's found and who or you wishes it's plain new no butchery an improvement if anything. BTW the suggestions if so are totally doable and reversible without impact or added problems I do tons of that for road debris and mostly heat shield with tack welds rusted not yet for this,

Thanks

Definitely isn't on me though. I bought it 4k miles ago and I noticed it after I bought it.

OK, with that and still sold under warranty (right?) it's on them. Maybe a struggle if damaged if there or 100 feet after you took it away crap.
I bring up damage because in and around my own short travels the sides of the roads are a mess of car parts busted off. I'm in New England similar possible situations many places but cars are plain TOO low for still some original roads area dates back to the 1600s or so! Those frost heave is expected and deal with it then settled as it warms up are cracks and pot holes till they get done is a routine never catch everything. That or you hit parts from another before it's off the road to the side.
Just saying it can happen and not notice it - road debris,

I found the source of the noise.

When the car is shifted from neutral to drive the muffler (located in the center of the car) pushes down slightly (maybe a quarter inch). When that happens the muffler starts to vibrate (not always). When the car is taken out of drive I can see the muffler move back up and stop rattling.

? OK, Whole exhaust should handle 1/4" back away from engine to middle of the car alone isn't that much. The trick now is to safely (it's not safe to do this but it can be done) is gently "brake stand" it - meaning hold brake and in drive give it a fight and again in reverse. Same time be watching engine mounts and exhaust flex to deal with motion.
How to do that? It's hard alone and best on a lift where wheels are still on surface which most don't have.
This car is too low to just get or see clearly under it and away from it running away with YOU under it.
It's under warranty. Just tell them what you observed let them deal with it. Now should be able to send you pictures of it if demonstrated damage. I can't say but it shouldn't be making the noise so if you really mean just 1/4 INCH that's just too close to anything for exhaust??
Change up here on my part: Try cold a totally safe way to run your hand (real tough gloves please) around pipes and follow along. It's just too close the question will be ''why" is probably bent is my hunch.
Tough one but is seeming like damage so far but can't know. There should be evidence found checking this out of something.
Then it's a case of when did that happen if evidence found.
I just can't know what it will take to fix that just that ONE QUARTER INCH clearance isn't that much shouldn't cause a noise so why is it that close? To be found in person checking is it. Good grief - just do the observations this isn't so safe or easy alone. Best with help or possibly camera(s) to watch it live??
Can't determine much at all - sorry but it isn't right just the clearance,

Thanks for all your help. I'm going to call my normal mechanic this morning before deciding if I take it to him or take it to the dealership. I definitely don't have a way to safely check it myself any further.

Good move! Almost any with even short experience in real world would know - pry things and make it happen. Exhaust not this is too new if I replace stuff it always gets a hand around the parts to be sure of clearance - exhaust isn't fixed tight to engine on purpose allows for that assorted ways or damage. A redo older is mechanic's fault for not noticing,
