2012 Toyota prius v won't start Sign In

Left car idle for 3 months. Went to start it but it wouldn't start. Tried charging the battery and jump starting from another car but engine wouldn't turn over. After the charge the lights seem bright and some dashboard lights come on but the engine still will not turn over. Any suggestions?

The auxiliary battery isn't used to start the engine. It just supplies power to certain systems. MG2 is used to start the engine and supplied power by the HV battery.

If you have no electrical experience dealing with high voltage circuits or the equipment and service information to service them, I suggest you have it towed to your dealer.

OK - 1 - Please avoid the term "turnover" with a car as it means double things to lay or tech people many times. A turnover is a pastry food!

Does the engine crank but not start or not crank? With either what noises if any heard?

If it cranks and doesn't start you need to follow these procedures at this site also to find what is missing,

(edit in) I have ZERO experience with these and just saw post above that the ordinary battery isn't involved and agree it would need a dealer,

I need to reiterate what DS mentioned here.

This car carries enough voltage and current to kill you instantly so I do not suggest you make any attempt at repairing this vehicle.

Again and apologize: This car may be totally under warranty for this. If dealing with (sure seems so) different voltage set up for engine vs electric I again say dealer only for these,

Sorry if I caused any confusion. When I press the start button, a few dashboard lights come on but absolutely no noise from the gasoline engine and no "ready" light. This happened once before when the car was idle for several months but the last time (about a year ago) the car started when jumper cables were attached.
I will not go near the main power batteries but as I understand it the 12 volt battery is the power source for starting the engine.
I tried disconnecting the battery for several minutes and reattaching it but this didn't change anything.
Trying to save a tow to the dealer.

If you read what to do in its owner's manual for this if mentioned at all it probably says don't jump it at all? Can't know, and even if still working (not) wouldn't tool up for specialty work that could never pay off even the cost of training and tools for a different concept very integrated into the whole car.

Owner's manual may also say what to do if a car like this is left to be stored for X amount of time. Owner's and regular driver's need to know and quirks with their cars if a anti-theft issue by time or a dead battery you need to know if even a specific password type thing to allow it to run isn't just magically overridden by every even well trained tech,

The auxiliary battery only powers certain computers and equipment that is used to control the high voltage system. The HV battery provides power to MG2 that is used to start the engine.

Did you have the 12 volt battery tested to see if it was any good? What is the voltage on the auxiliary battery terminals with the ignition on?

If it is the original battery, it would be an AGM battery. You can't use a conventional battery charger on an AGM battery. You need a charger that is capable of charging AGM batteries.

I would never boost a Prius with another vehicle unless it was an absolute emergency. A jumper pack or removing the battery and charging it would be wise. Too many things could go wrong that could fry sensitive electronic components that would cost tons of money to replace.

Thanks for your help. I contacted Toyota service and they suggested jumping to start. There is a procedure in the owners manual that I followed but no luck.
Do you think I should get an OBD reading? I'll need to borrow a reader if it will help.
I don't have a voltage meter available so I will have to borrow one to get a reading.

You should make sure the auxiliary battery tests good and is fully charged before connecting a scanner to the vehicle. Doesn't make sense to troubleshoot various systems if the auxiliary battery is no good.

If the HV battery is too discharged, for whatever reason, the vehicle will never start and the ready light won't come on. Its not common, but possible. If that is the case, it has to go to the dealer.
