2011 Altima engine light, what to check next? Sign In

I bought the altima 2011 base (4D) brand new, and it has been driving well. The mileage is low: 46.6k miles for 9 years. Mainly used for short drive to work or grocery purchase.

In the past year or so the engine light has been on for multiple times. At the beginning the code is P0101. Tried multiple things, and the code comes up in a few weeks or a few months: bought a new gas tank cap, replaced engine air filter, cleaned mass air sensor, replaced mass air sensor.

Recently there is another code show up P0456. Not sure what to do. Get a new gas tank cap? Check the fuel pressure?

There are couple things I can think of that might or might not relavent:
- noticed that the engine oil is consumed somehow. I put about 4.75 qt engine oil each time about 6 months, and recenlty noticed the decanted old oil is quite less, guess about 4.0 qt or so. Maybe there is small leak somewhere, but no oil stain observed beneath the car.
- The car hit curb and pit hole several times, the cover underneath the engine was ripped off one time and get replaced one, the front right wheel was slightly bent one time and was hammered back.
- The battery red pole is very easy to get rust, has cleaned multiple times, but accumulates much faster than my other car.

What the hell does that mean. The car only holds 5 quarts so you ran it completely dry?

P0456 has nothing to do with that but if you ran it that low you will soon be looking for an engine.

The code means a small leak in the fuel tank vent system. It could be a gas cap but not real likely. The way you find the leak is with a smoke machine while using a scan tool to close the vent valve. Probably not something you are equipped for.

Of two of those: (1) Oil? Do you mean you measured back out .75Qt. less than what was known in there 6 months earlier? Alone if so that's fine. Filters will NOT release all oil unless heated if need be weight one new and used just note that.
Sub note: That's too long to go change oil more time matters too.

(2) Battery Pos. cable? Clean it off dry as can be with all cautions of the acid. Now look days or a week later for any dampness near that early would look like just water. It's leaking acid there if so - toss that battery it has a crack. That or because I just found one that did that on a Maxima, 2012 two year old or less battery?? That can happen from how they are handled before you got it or by you don't lift by battery posts. Tess just by age always a good idea not more than 4 years no matter what.

That's it of the list,

T

I decanted 4.0 qt from the engine, then filled in 4.75 qt. 6 months later I still decanted about 4.0 qt from the engine.

I do not have the scan equipment you mentioned. Is it a serious problem? should I send it to repair shop to check out?

Thanks.

It's not a problem that effects the operation of the car but the light won't go out until you resolve it and that means if something more serious goes wrong you won't know it.
