The big problem is why. Since you have been driving this way for a while now, you likely have a blown head gasket at this point. That is pumping hot exhaust gasses into the cooling system. Air, vapor of boiling even if this self purges cooling down could suck in air thru a leak. It probably can't hold pressure now would prove that thought.
