2008 Nissan Xterra - Battery/Positive Battery Cable Sign In

Yes....I am a man, and I know NOTHING about cars. So here is my problem:

Car: 2008 Nissan Xterra w/ 47000 miles

Issue: 2 weeks ago (7/13/2010) my car wouldn't start, it would just click. I had to have it jumped in the evening (7/13/2010) and the following morning (7/14/2010) to get it to start. I took it over to the Nissan dealership and was told that I needed a new battery AND a positive battery cable for a total of $600. After laughing then being pissed off, I had then jump my car again and I took it back home

Steps taken: On 7/14/2010 in the evening I took it over to Sears Automotive and they replaced the battery ($100) and tightened down the positive cable terminal, but they didn't say anything about needing the battery cable replaced

Questions: Would it be possible for the battery cables to need replacement after only having the car for 2.5 years? How can I confirm that the battery cables actually need to be replaced....can a place like AutoZone or NTB confirm that the battery cables need replacing? Is there anything that I should watch out for as in early warning signs? My car starts fine now, but not sure if the cables or something else still needs to be worked on. Was the dealership trying to rip me off?

Thanks for your help

A Clueless Tx man

Do the cables look corroded??

I am not a Mechanic But these guys here can help you right along....Also next time I would let Autozone ck the battery their test is free they will also check alternator to rule that issue out also...

If you cant fix it then dont mess with it...

If you took all the people from Sears, NTB and AutoZone and combined all their technical knowledge, you wouldn't come up with one tech.

I'm sure the dealer was taking a most expensive route to a problem that could have been dealt with a lot cheaper. Most independent shops will replace cable ends and things like that where dealers will only exchange the whole cable.
