2008 Kia Rio Dies When Warms Up Sign In

Hi All,

I have a 2008 Kia Rio LX 1.6L with 113,000 miles. When the vehicle warms up to operating tempature the engine dies when stopped at a traffic light or stop sign or when driving at a very low speed. The engine runs fine when re-started and doesn't give any further trouble until it has cooled down and then warmed back up to operating temperature, then it does the same thing again. If I am driving at highway speeds and the engine gets warmed up the engine will jerk, for lack of a better term, like it wants to die but I guess since I am doing 60-65 it keeps running.

Then things took a turn for the worse last night. I was exiting the freeway and the engine died when I slowed down to exit. It had already done what I described above but for whatever reason it died once I slowed down to exit the highway. I tried to re-start it. The engine would turn over but refused to start up. I had to wait until the engine cooled down below operating temperature before it would start up.

The check engine light is on and I took it to Autozone and had them get the code. The guy said it was a cylinder one misfire.

I haven't done any troubleshooting because I don't have much experience with working on these newer computer controlled vehicles. If anyone can point me in the right direction on this I would be grateful.

Thanks in advance for any advice,
Carl

The first step would be to determine what is causing cylinder one to misfire.

sounds logical, I know that each plug has its own individual ignition coil, but not sure if these are controlled by some sort of ignition control system or how it operates. I do know that I just had a tuneup performed only a few months ago, I am hoping this would rule out the plugs, but I guess I could take a look. But, would a bad plug cease to fire once the car reached operating temp? These are the questions.

Thanks,
Carl

That wouldn't rule the plugs out at all. In fact one of them could have been cracked during installation. You could also have a leaking valve cover submerging the plug in oil. Then it possible that it's not an ignition problem at all. All these things have to be determined by a competent tech.

The coils are controlled by the PCM.

okay, that makes perfect sense. Tomorrow I will pull the plugs and take a look. Also, what is a PCM? If the plugs are okay and the ignition coil is firing could this unit be suspect?

Thanks again,
Carl

You really need to take this to a competent shop. You don't have nearly enough understanding of the system to figure this out unless you find it by accident. If you start handling the plugs you may wipe off the evidence the tech will be looking for.

so, this is not something a person with limited experience should mess around with. Got ya. Problem is funds are limited for trips to the mechanic. In fact, don't think I could afford one trip to the mechanic. But, if you think this is something better left to experts I'll just have to find a way to make it happen. This is our only means of transportation so can't have it out of commission. Thanks anyway for your help.

The diagnosis needs to be done by the experts. At that point you can decide if you can handle the repair or not once that has been diagnosed
