2007 chrysler sebring completely melted an ignition coil while parked and idling Sign In

2007 sebring 2.7litre 6 cylinder about 230 000 km. The car was idling low when stopped in gear for a while before the meltdown but showed nothing on the dash warning lights. While parked and running it shut off and when i popped the hood the coil was completely melted and smoking. I do not know the numbering sequence to describe which coil it was but while looking into the engine from the front it is the furthest to the right in the set of three closest to the front I is also the coil with a third short wire running to some sensor. When I tried to start the vehicule it gives a good shot and seems to get stuck in ignition mode(it keeps running the starter until i turn the key all the way back.) battery tested good. I will replace the coil and plug which was very fouled but would like to know if anyone has seen a melted coil and if it is symptomatic of some bigger problem. Thank you I have had great success with your help in the past and sorry the message is so long.

Not sure what you could be looking at there. The only other thing in the coil supply circuit is a capacitor.

After you replace the coil, check all the fuses and the ASD relay. Make sure the wiring harness isn't melted anywhere.

Thanks hammer time, in the end the third wire seems to have been added by a previous owner and runs to a switch on the inside of the car and i have not yet figured what it is supposed to do . I will check further into he capacitor and relay angle . I had a friend help me with a compression test which gave 175 on the 3 cylinders in the front which included the cylinder with the melted coil. I replaced the coil and plug but nothing changed it still would not start and continued to work the starter until I turn the key back. the coils are getting electricity when tested . I am out of intelligent questions and will bug you no more until i can refine my line of questioning .

That sounds like someone was trying to make a kill switch? If all non OE junk I'd remove all that it's probably the problem still unknown if other issues because of that. Check how that was routed for IDK, drilled holes to interior or who knows? T

Sounds like a possible ignition kill?

Start off with pulling the codes. See if it has spark and see if it will fire up on a shot of starting fluid.

I would put any wiring back to factory until you can get a handle on the no start.

Hello I have made a mistake in saying the coils were getting spark it was a misunderstanding . They are in fact not getting spark I have had very little time to work on this but will get a chance in the next couple of days as the tow away date is looming large. Will check asd and capacitors. Thanks

If you found you have no spark then you also need to test for injector pulse using a noid light.

Both the coils and the injectors should be receiving a constant 12v when the key is first turned on, then continue during cranking. The other wire will be a pulsing ground from the PCM. The noid light will test for both signals without damaging the PCM.
