2006 Suzuki Swift - Rumbling noise at low rpm (Solved) Sign In

Hi guys, I'm hoping one of you guys can help me diagnose what's the problem with my car. I'm not an expert in this field so I'll try explain thinks the best I can and apologise for my lacking of knowledge.

2006
Suzuki
Swift 1.5 GLX (manual)
25,100

Anyhow, today after arriving home from work (15 minute journey) and manoeuvring my car into a space, I noticed a rumbling noise coming from underneath the car, somewhat central overall.

I then went about trying to recreate the noise and found it to be prevalent when the engine is at low revs, around 1k rpm. This would explain why I heard it whilst manoeuvring as I was in a mixture of 1st and reverse gear, but this noise also happens when the car is stationary and in neutral and revving the engine.

What worries me most is that I actually had my car service 3 weeks ago and it was the big one where pretty much everything is done/checked, to which I was told the car was in perfect working order.

As to give a better example of my issue, linked below is a link to an audio clip taken with my phone. All I was doing was revving the engine in neutral whilst stationary, but you can quite clearly hear it when it get up to 1k rpm, and then back down to 1k rpm. To me it sounds like something is rattling, but as I mentioned, I'm no expert.

Any help that can be provided is extremely helpful.

Thanks!

I've got the volume cranked and am having a hard time hearing this. I think it may be worth your time to have a tech look at this. Could be a simple fix, could be something big. But there is a limit to what we can diagnose without actually having your car in front of us.

After looking into the issue further I found out the problem was actually a exhaust bracket that was welded to the top edge of the exhaust box nearest the rear of the car. When I was going down to the bite point, the bracket was rattling against the exhaust box which was vibrating because of the low revs.

My new question is that I took it to the local Suzuki garage and they quoted £140 (with some loyalty discount) for parts and fitting, including VAT. They said that the bracket can't be re-welded as its galvanized (I'm not sure whether he meant the bracket or the exhaust box) so I would need a new back box which has to be ordered and would be there tomorrow.

I then took it down the road to the place where I get my winter tyres done, who also do exhausts, brakes, gearboxes etc, and they said they would re-weld it for £48 and it would take about 20 minutes. He said he'd take off the back box for access, clean up the weld area and the bracket and then re-attach it. He also said (which is my reason for this post) that the exhaust box isn't galvanized and showed me a few spots on it where there was very minor rust, with reasoning that galvanized metal would give off toxic fumes when it gets hot.

Which option do you guys think is the better one to go with? I obviously would rather save the money but I want to make sure the job is done properly. Also, which of the two guys was actually telling me the truth?

Thanks again!

You can weld galvanized steel, but must have good ventilation as the burning zinc coating isn't good for you. It can still rust, just takes longer. Galvanized steel is regular steel with a layer of zinc andonized over it. The zinc acts as an anode to prevent oxidation of the steel. But once the zinc is sacrificed the steel starts to rust. The weld repair will probably be fine, although I am not the one looking at the condition of this myself and am relying on that man's judgement. If the pipe only has a couple spots of rust, get the weld done and it will last for quite a while.
