I have an '06 Mitsubishi Galant 4 Cylinder with a little over 100k miles. 2.4L
The problem started when I let my mom the borrow the car. It was running close to Empty and I asked her to fuel it up before she returned to get me. So she went on a Ferris Bueller type road trip and came back with the needle dancing on E.
She then said whenever she stopped at a light, it had a rough idle. Of course I didn't believe her because the car was running fine until then.
I took it to the nearest station and when I did stop at a light, the car idled down and started to tremble.
I filled up to Full and when I tried to start it, it would not turn over. It took me pumping the gas for the car to finally start.
Before, I had never let the tank get that low. Whenever the gas light came on, I made a panicked B-line to the nearest station.
Right now the car has a Running Too Lean code (which seafoam did not fix), it still has a rough idle and the car has died on me a few times after a cold start (possibly 10 minutes after and when I stop at a light or when I'm backing out of my drive way and I brake).
When I put gas in, it does not matter if I put in one gallon or ten, I have to pump the gas to get it started. But, when I put in one gallon it did not seem to have as hard a time to turn over.
One more symptom is an audible squeal or whine from the engine when I start it in the morning.
I have not done anything yet to the car. I have searched forums and I have narrowed it down to a faulty fuel pump. I wanted to know if anyone has a better explanation. This car has no fuel filter, in case anyone asks.

You need to see what the fuel pressure is. Not sure if this one uses a returnless fuel system or not. If it does, you would need a good scan tool to read the sensor reading.
Is this a flex fuel car? Is there any chance someone put E85 in this by mistake?
The belt squeal at startup is a different issue altogether. Very normal on a car with the original belt and tensioner to do that on a cold morning and is a sign it is getting worn out or possibly one of the components that it drives. Try taking the serpentine belt off in the morning and then starting it. Does it still do it? If you do replace the belt, make sure you put on a new tensioner as well. They wear at about the same rate and an old tensioner can kill a new belt. Don't get the china cheapo one either, I use Gates belts and tensioners on everything.

In tank fuel pumps are cooled and lubricated by the fuel in the tank. When you run a car out of gas or very low, it pumps a lot of air through the pump which overheats it and causes some severe wear and many times, failure when they cool off.
You will need to use a fuel pressure gauge to verify this as Nick pointed out.

A) the low gas light is too late...you want fuel in that tank say @1/4 tank- yes it wiill get below that ONCE or twice.
B) pumping the gas pedal with FI is pretty much useless - anecdotal results at best. - Holdng the pedal to floor that is ....effective called CLEAR FLOOD
Anyway your issue - the lean code are because you ran out of fuel, and or have a fuel pressure issue - I would suggest you say no filter? then do a fuel pressure test using a gauge - Those pumps HATE cavitation low fuel see A above.
A simple test before we start throwing time and parts at it

Thanks for your quick responses.
It is not a Flex Fuel car and you are probably right about the belts.
The info about the pump and overheating is very informative. I will check the fuel pressure and go from there. I will report my findings.
