2006 Grand Prix heating issue

I've got a 2006 grand prix, 3.8 with 88k miles on it. My wifes car.....recently the car doesn't produce very much heat inside the car. Even though the temp gauge in the dash seemed to be reading normal, I thought it had to be the thermostat. Yesterday I put a new t-stat in the car and still no to very little heat. The only settings on the blower that make any heat are the ones that do not include the defrost. When I change it to defrost, the air turns cold. I lost very little coolant when I did the thermostat, but did have to add about a half gallon when I checked it after doing the t-stat. I talked to a buddy whose brother had a similar issue in his 99 g.p. 3.8 and it turned out to be the head gaskets. Thought I'd come on here and see what you all think. I will keep a close eye on it here this week to see if it is going thru coolant, as that would lead me to suspect head gasket issues.......thanks

That could be a problem with the control head. It needs to troubleshooted further to confirm.

I am taking it in to get diagnosed tomorrow, might be a dumb question but, what is a "control head" TY for the help

The control head is the central electronic control where all the buttons and knobs are.

Talked to a mechanic, he suggested cleaning/flushing out the heater core....I will do that this weekend but Im not convinved that will do much. It seems to me that if It has heat on one setting (Vent/recirculate) if the problem is the heater core, shouldn't it respond the same temp-wise at every setting on the control head?? Thanks for the help......

If you can get heat from any mode as you said you did, then the core is fine and the problem is in the inside controls.
