A few weeks ago, I was driving down the highway at about 70mph, when all of a sudden, my car lost power and the check engine light came on. I found that I could keep it at about 60mph, but any acceleration above that would cause it to lose power again. On the way home, I found that it wasn't speed that was the issue, it was RPM. I could not rev the engine above 2250. It didn't matter what gear I was in, or even in neutral or park. At 2250, the engine would stall a little, and the RPM would drop, then go back up. I drove the car to my dad's house, turned it off, and asked him to look at it. When I started it back up, the check engine light was off, and the acceleration was fine.
About five days later, it did the same thing. This time, the check engine light stayed on after restarting the car, so I had Autozone run the code for me. I don't remember the exact code (sorry, I lost the paper they gave me) but it was for a cam sensor fault. When I tried to restart the car, it took four or five seconds of cranking before the engine started.
This problem isn't consistent. I've had it come up when it's below 30 degrees outside, and when it's 60. In rain, and in sunshine. Sometimes I drive the car for a few days, and it will suddenly come up, sometimes it will happen when I haven't driven the car for a while.
I know I need to get it to a mechanic, but I want to see if there's anything I can try before I pay for the extra labor. Is the cam sensor something I could replace myself? I have more time than money, so anything I can take care of would be helpful. If it is something that a trained mechanic needs to do, please try to give me an idea of what I would be looking to pay.
