Just noticed this today. The temperature gauge starts to creep up to the high side. Prior to today it always stayed about half way between C and H. I noticed that when stopped waiting on a traffic light, I can see the needle moving up. I put the car in neutral and step on the gas a bit I hear a noise like a belt slipping then the noise goes away and the temp starts dropping back to normal. I've filled the coolant tank with full strength antifreeze and checked the belts which look OK to me. This is a work vehicle and has over 233K on it. I haven't had many problems with it since I bought it with 33K on it, just oil changes belt replacements, and brakes. Its been a good car and would like to keep it a bit longer. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Lots of things can cause overheating but with noise the belt may just be slipping so not just condition of belt but if it will stay at proper tension. Outside chance that water pump's impellers are corroded but that doesn't account for the noise.

If you've had to add coolant then this needs a pressure test as it shouldn't consume any really. By the way, NEVER USE STRAIGHT ANTIFREEZE! IT IS PLAIN TERRIBLE AT TRANSFERRING HEAT! It's chiefly there for freeze protection and important for corrosion protection but a lousy coolant. Never saw a container suggest more than 50/50 which gets you -34F freeze protection and if ever exposed to lower than that it just makes slush harmlessly and not many folks need more as the vehicles don't run too well if a lot colder than that anyway.

The squeal/noise could be the coolant leaking on the belt? Fans must work on time and system stay full or more diagnosing is required before you blow a head gasket if not already too late,

T
