2005 Ford E-150 - Replace Master Brake Cylinder? Sign In

Hi All!

I have a 2005 Ford E-150 (with cruise control), and I think I need to replace my master cylinder. In the course of a day or two, the brakes went from just fine, to being easily pushed down to the floor . . . and just barely able to stop after a long roll. Pumping the brakes does not improve the brakes, nor is there any fluid leaking.

So, my diagnosis was a problem with the master brake cylinder.

If that sounds likely, how hard a job is that? I'm reasonably solid, mechanically. I've changed serpentine belts, replaced brakes, fixed window motors, installed an inverter . . . nothing remarkable, but I can get around pretty well.

So, would you suggest I read up on the process and give it a shot. Or, even for someone who's fairly solid (mechanically speaking), is this a job for the pro's?

Also, if I go the pro-route, would it be generally beneficial to order the part myself from auto zone part here, or simply let the brake shop get the part?

All input welcome!

TIA!

~john

I applaud you trying to fix your own car but brakes is not the place to start. If your system hasn't lost any brake fluid, then your probably right about the diagnosis. I wouldn't go trying to supply any parts for the shop though. They don't like that and you would leave with no guarantee at all. AutoZone is not know for selling quality parts either.

I mentioned that I've replaced my brakes and have done a number of repairs previous to this. But your input is still welcome. Tx!
