I have a 2004 Chevy Blazer 2wd, and I was hearing a "trickling water" noise when I accelerated...The car was running fine, but the noise was new. The noise eventually went away recently (after about 3 weeks)...car still running fine. BUT, yester day when I was driving home, I smelled antifreeze...and although the car wasnt overheating, I turned on my heater just in case...it was blowing warm air, and then all of a sudden the air got cold...REALLY cold. I was told it could possibly be the thermostat, so I purchased a new one. My husband was looking at the car, and when he opened the radiator, he saw that the rad cap was caked with what looked like thick clay like dirt...and when he looked in the radiator, he noticed that it was extremely dirty/rusty. At this point, he has flushed the cooling system and replaced the thermostat..the car isn't overheating, but the temp does seem to fluctuate more than it used to...Also, the heater is still blowing COLD air, but when you rev the engine, it seems to warm up a little, but turns cold immediately when you take your foot off the gas...could this possibly be my water pump going out? If not, do you have any ideas of what is going on with it?

Thanks for your reply...Is there a way to find out for sure if it is the heater core or not before I purchase and replace it (or test we can perform)?

You can pressure test the system to look for the leak but you have a lot of cooling system problems in your future, judging by the condition of the coolant.

heater cores either leak or get plugged up. if they leak you will see the fluid either in the front passenger floor mat or on the ground if its mounted in the engine bay.

you can see if its plugged pretty easily. there are two heater hoses attached to the heater core.....the supply and the return.

the supply will be hot and so should the return if the heater core is working properly.

you might also have a faulty heater control valve or the vacuum control line is kinked, broken, melted.
